A zirconia oxygen analyzer, also known as a zirconia oxygen sensor or zirconia oxygen probe, is a type of sensor used to measure the concentration of oxygen in gas mixtures. It utilizes a zirconia-based solid electrolyte to detect and quantify the oxygen content in the sample gas. Zirconia oxygen analyzers are commonly used in various industrial applications, combustion processes, and environmental monitoring. Here are some key features and working principles of zirconia oxygen analyzers:


1. Zirconia-based sensing element: The core component of a zirconia oxygen analyzer is a zirconia-based sensing element. Zirconia (zirconium dioxide, ZrO2) is a ceramic material with excellent oxygen ion conductivity at high temperatures. The sensing element consists of a zirconia electrolyte tube, typically in the form of a small ceramic rod or tube.


2. Dual-chamber structure: The zirconia oxygen analyzer usually employs a dual-chamber structure. The sensing element separates the sample gas into two compartments: the reference chamber and the measurement chamber. The chambers are separated by the zirconia electrolyte tube.


3. Oxygen concentration measurement principle: The zirconia electrolyte exhibits different electrical conductivity characteristics based on the oxygen partial pressure difference between the reference and measurement chambers. When a voltage is applied across the two chambers, oxygen ions from the measurement chamber migrate through the zirconia electrolyte to the reference chamber, driven by the oxygen concentration gradient. This movement of oxygen ions causes a change in the electrical potential across the sensing element.


4. Nernst voltage measurement: The zirconia oxygen analyzer measures the Nernst voltage, which is the difference in electrical potential between the reference and measurement chambers. The Nernst voltage is directly proportional to the logarithm of the oxygen partial pressure difference between the two chambers, which is related to the oxygen concentration in the sample gas.


5. Temperature control: Zirconia oxygen analyzers require high operating temperatures to ensure the conductivity of the zirconia electrolyte. The sensing element is typically heated to temperatures around 700-900 degrees Celsius (1292-1652 degrees Fahrenheit). The analyzer includes a built-in heater or external temperature control system to maintain the required operating temperature.


6. Output and calibration: The zirconia oxygen analyzer provides an electrical output signal proportional to the oxygen concentration in the sample gas. This signal can be in the form of voltage, current, or a digital signal. The analyzer requires calibration using known gas mixtures with known oxygen concentrations to establish a linear relationship between the measured signal and the oxygen concentration.


Zirconia oxygen analyzers are widely used in applications such as combustion control in industrial processes, flue gas monitoring in power plants, automotive exhaust gas analysis, and environmental monitoring.
